CES: The Motorstorm Apocalypse Approaches

The PlayStation 3 occupies a healthy section of Sony's enormous CES 2011 booth. While Move -- and 3D-enabled Move games like Killzone 3 -- are the biggest draw here, Motorstorm Apocalypse is holding its own with a steady stream of attendees curious to try out the upcoming racer in 3D.

At CES, Sony is showing off a new stage in the highly destructive racer: a collapsing row of downtown high-rise buildings. And you have to burn through the crumbing slice of metropolis on a dirt bike. Motorstorm Apocalypse definitely feels like previous chapters in the PS3 racing series, but the new emphasis on surviving fantasy environments offers a fresh take on a series that may have been painting itself into a corner on locations. The first Motorstorm unfolded in the desert, then it took over a tropical island -- a burned-out future allows the developer to really stretch the possibilities of what could constitute a race track in a world going to hell.

The 3D feels right for Motorstorm Apocalypse, especially in this stage where not only are the buildings falling down around you, but fiery explosions and showers of sparks punctuate every daredevil corner -- and your miserable failures when you fly off the track. In some respects, it made Motorstorm a bit difficult to play, only because I found my eyes drawn to the solid 3D effects in the environment, only to snap to attention just as my biker missed a building-to-building jump -- and slammed face-first into the edge of a rooftop.

Once I was able to concentrate on the racing itself, I enjoyed the slipperiness of the dirt bike for threading the needle of the collapsing buildings. And if I ever felt the bike start to get away from me, a good shot of boost made sure rubber found purchase on the concrete.

Motorstorm Apocalypse is set for release in 2011. Sony did not offer a firm release date at CES. Look for more on this racer -- and Sony's other 3D games -- in the near future here on IGN.
